Multiwire Branch Circuits: A Common Safety Issue in Older Homes

Older Sacramento homes often have multiwire branch circuits that no longer meet code. Learn the risks and why an inspection matters for your safety.

If you own an older home in Sacramento, there's a good chance your house contains multiwire branch circuits (MWBCs), a once-common wiring method that can present serious safety hazards if it isn't properly installed or maintained. During our electrical safety inspections, we frequently find MWBCs that don't meet current code requirements, putting homes and families at risk.

What Is a Multiwire Branch Circuit?

A multiwire branch circuit is a wiring configuration where two hot wires (typically black and red) share a single neutral wire, all running through one cable such as 12/3. This method was popular for decades because it saved on materials and installation time while powering multiple circuits.

When properly installed, the two hot conductors connect to opposite phases in your panel, so the shared neutral carries only the difference in current between the two circuits rather than the sum. For example, if one circuit draws 10 amps and the other draws 15 amps, the neutral carries only 5 amps.

Here's what many homeowners don't know: before 2008, it was perfectly legal to install multiwire branch circuits on two separate single-pole breakers with no connection between them.

Prior to the 2008 National Electrical Code (NEC) update, electricians routinely installed 12/3 cable with the black and red hot wires on separate single-pole breakers positioned on opposite phases, but without handle ties or a common trip mechanism. As long as the two circuits were on opposite phases to prevent neutral overload, this met code at the time.

That changed in 2008. The NEC was revised to require all multiwire branch circuits to have simultaneous disconnect capability. Every MWBC now requires either a 2-pole common trip breaker or two single-pole breakers with identified handle ties.

Why This Safety Requirement Matters

The 2008 code change addressed real hazards.

Shock hazard during maintenance. The primary danger occurs when someone turns off one breaker to work on what they believe is a de-energized circuit. Without handle ties or a common trip breaker, the shared neutral can still be energized from the other circuit, creating a serious shock hazard.

Neutral overload and fire risk. When both hot conductors are accidentally placed on the same phase instead of opposite phases, the neutral becomes dangerously overloaded. Instead of carrying the difference between the two circuits, it must carry the sum of both loads, potentially double the amperage it was designed to handle. This overheating can degrade insulation and create conditions for arc-fault fires hidden behind your walls.

Disconnected neutral dangers. If the shared neutral becomes loose or disconnected, voltage imbalances occur that can damage or destroy appliances and electronics. One circuit might receive dangerously high voltage while the other receives too little, creating fire hazards and equipment damage.

Common MWBC Problems We Find

  • Missing handle ties or common trip breakers. Older installations that met code when installed but now require upgrading.
  • Hot wires on the same phase. A dangerous wiring error that doubles the current load on the neutral.
